Top Herbal Supplements You’ve Never Heard Of: Part 1


You know the A-listers: Green tea, acai berry, turmeric, aloe vera…these herbal celebrities always make headlines for their medicinal properties.

But what about cordyceps? Bilberry and boswellia? You may not have heard of these supplement superstars, but they offer some pretty impressive health benefits that deserve a red carpet roll-out.


What is it? Native to China, Mongolia, and Korea, astragalus is an herb whose roots have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries. It is also known as milkvetch or goat’s-thorn.

What are its benefits? Astragalus contains three components that benefit health:

*Polysaccharides – Studies show that these carbohydrate molecules act as antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory agents. (x)

*Flavonoids-  Natural antioxidants, flavonoids are plant compounds that neutralize harmful free radicals and may promote cardiovascular health. (x)

*Saponins – Found in many plant species, these compounds may lower cholesterol and boost cell health and immune function. (x)


What is it? A member of the blueberry family, bilberry is a small shrub native to Northern Europe. It is also known as whortleberry.

What are its benefits?

*Antioxidants – Bilberries get their deep bluish-red color from plant pigments called anthocyanosides, which research shows have antioxidant properties that may curb cell damage and boost immune function. (x)

*Improves circulatory health- Early studies suggest that anthocyanosides in bilberries may also improve circulation in those with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), as well as reducing pain, swelling, and bruising associated with the condition. (x)

*Regulate cholesterol- One study found that bilberry lowered bad cholesterol (LDL) and raised good cholesterol (HDL) levels in the study’s participants. (x)

*Improve Vision –¬†Traditionally, bilberry has been used to improve eyesight. Research indicates that it may especially improve retina problems in those with diabetes or hypertension.¬†(x)


What is it? Also known as Indian Frankincense, boswellia is a plant native to India and the Punjab region of Pakistan. It is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine. Our extract is sourced from the plant’s sap, or resin.

What are its benefits? 

*Anti-inflammatory- Boswellia has been used for centuries to alleviate joint pain. Studies suggest its anti-inflammatory properties may decrease pain associated with osteoarthritis. (x)

*Supports gastrointestinal health- Boswellia has been used to treat symptoms of ulcerative colitis and for upset stomach relief. (x)

*Infection healing- Boswellia may speed up the healing process, counteracting the effects of the flu and some insect-borne viruses. (x)


What is it? Cordyceps is a cylindrical fungus that grows at high elevations in the mountainous regions of China.

What are its benefits?

*Improves athletic performance-Research shows that taking cordyceps increases athletic endurance by maintaining blood glucose levels during exercise. (x) (x)

*Cardiovascular health- Cordyceps may also improve circulation, promoting a healthy heart. (x)

*Immune support- Though more research is needed, cordyceps may improve immunity by supporting cells that activate immune response. (x)


What is it? Corydalis is a flowering plant native to Africa and China.

What are its benefits? 

*Mental wellness and sleep- Early research suggests that compounds in the plant may relax the nervous system, supporting mental wellness and relieving insomnia. (x)

*Pain relief – Studies found that an alkaloid found naturally in corydalis, tetrahydropalmatine (THP,) may be effective in reducing nerve pain. (x)
